According to statistics in the 7th National Development, value addition to products is one of the prioritised strategies and as a district, Kalomo isn’t shying away from achieving this goal. Kalomo intends to be a very prosperous district through the diversification of its agricultural industry by attracting investment in maize processing, sunflower processing, groundnuts processing and soya-beans processing.

The district no longer intends to trade its maize as raw material but as both finished and by-products of it. The district based on its maize production has the capacity to have a milling plant in Chief Chikanta and Chief Siachitema area which make up 70% of the total maize production of the district (IDP Public Participation Meeting 2020). These areas do not only have to house the raw material itself but also have improved road accessibility through the government’s strategy of the “Improved Rural Connectivity Project under the Word Bank and also the areas are connected to Rural Grid as part of the Rural Electrification program (REA) thus making these areas an investment pool for a milling plant.

The district has limited storage facilities, and therefore, will require that new storage facilities be constructed in strategic locations in all the four agricultural block zones (Chilala, Siachitema, Kanchele, and Kalomo Central). The storage facilities will be run by cooperatives or private sector participants. This will activate the infrastructure development in the district and create employment in the rural areas and will also allow for rural road development and maintenance as private buyers will be coerced to reach outlying areas to purchase the produce from these farming areas.

The diversification of small-scale farmers to produce high-value and perishable crops such as tomatoes, avocadoes, citrus fruits will also require the construction of park housing facilities that will require to be powered by either solar or hydro energy sources to preserve the crops. This will foster further rural electrification in the district.
