KALOMO DISTRICT

Welcome to Kalomo District. A Climate resilient District that is economically prosperous, and anchored on sustainable use of local resources.

Kalomo served as the Initial administrative capital of north-western Rhodesia between 1902 and 1907. Situated in the Southern Province, it is positioned within Latitude 160 and 170 south and Longitude 260 and 270 North, along Lusaka – Livingstone Road (T1)

The district is about 120 km north of Livingstone Town and roughly 400 km south of Lusaka. This is evident on cadastral maps, showcasing farms lining the rail route. The plateau’s fertile soil supports agricultural activities, with farms spanning approximately 11 kilometers on either side of the rail line.

Interestingly, Kalomo Town Council is one of Zambia’s oldest councils. Initially, Zimba district council fell under Kalomo until its separation in 2012 by the late President Michael Chilufya Sata.

Quick Facts

The District’s economy is mainly agriculture and livestock based. Kalomo District is the highest producer of maize in the country and has the second largest cattle population in the province.

Kalomo borders with Kafue National Park which is one of the largest wildlife reserves in the world. It has unique features such as Bbilili Hot Springs and Cultural Heritage Sites (Kalomo Farm Block, colonial buildings).
